Smoke contamination of mine kills 10 workers, injures 54
NOVOSIBIRSK/MOSCOW, Nov 25 (PRIME) -- 10 people were killed and 54 were injured by smoke contamination of the Listvyazhnaya mine, part of the SDS-Ugol company, one of Russia’s top-3 coal producers, a representative for emergency services said on Thursday.
"54 people were injured, 10 of them died," he said, adding that the fate of remaining 36 miners is unknown.
Contamination took place on the ventilation entry. According to preliminary reports, there were a total of 285 people in the mine.
As of noon, Moscow time, 239 workers were evacuated.
A criminal case for violation of industrial safety rules was initiated.
