US’ Qualcomm to design network for Russia’s 2014 Olympics – source

Ñî÷è àýðîïîðò îëèìïèàäàMOSCOW, Jun 28 (PRIME) -- U.S.’ smartphone chip maker Qualcomm plans to design wireless networks for major Russian mobile operator MegaFon in the 2014 Winter Olympics host city of Sochi, a source at Qualcomm said Thursday as cited by RIA Novosti.

In particular, these networks are expected to cover the city’s Olympic parks and five stadiums, the source said on the sidelines of the U.S.’ Uplinq-2012 conference held in San Diego.

The source did not provide further details on the cooperation between MegaFon and Qualcomm.

MegaFon has yet to provide any official comments.

MegaFon, which was appointed an official sponsor of the 2014 Sochi Olympics along with wireline giant Rostelecom, is now obliged to provide reliable wireless communications services during the Games.

Separately, the head of Qualcomm’s Russian office Mikhail Krylov said that the company plans to continue promoting its Snapdragon-branded systems based on the System-on-a-Chip (SoC) technology in Russia in cooperation with major domestic communications companies.

In 2011, Qualcomm started promoting its SoC-based Snapdragon systems - adopted for several models of advanced smartphones - on the global consumer market. The promotion started from several pilot projects launched by Qualcomm in several countries, including Russia, where the company first cooperated with major cellular phone retailer Svyaznoy. Qualcomm now plans to expand its promotion campaign in 2012, Krylov said.

“We are negotiating with the Big Three (mobile operators) and are considering the possibility of jointly developing a retail project with one of the operators,” Krylov said, adding that the timeline of the project has yet to be finalized.

Anna Aibasheva, spokeswoman for one of Russia’s largest mobile operators VimpelCom, said that the operator has not held talks with Qualcomm on the promotion of Snapdragon-branded equipment. Other major cell operators, MTS and MegaFon, have yet to comment.
