Greek official: Russian Railways may take part in OSE privatization
MOSCOW, Mar 4 (PRIME) -- Russian Railways could take part in the privatization of Greece’s Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE), the Greek government spokesman Simos Kedicoglou told RIA Novosti on March 1.
“The combination of Greece’s strategic location and Russian know-how in the railroad industry may give impressive results. Just imagine a modern railroad connected to port, say, in Thessaloniki. The port may become a gate for any kind of goods which arrive from Asia through the Suez Canal and may be then supplied to Europe via the railroad,” Kedicoglou said.
He said that the Greek government and Russian Railways are in an advanced stage of negotiations on the issue. The privatization will start in September and must be completed within one year, he said.
According to Kedicoglou, the railroad carries only 1.5% of all cargo in Greece, while the average global figures are 20% to 30%.
