Kaspersky says leaks of critical databases rise 33% in Jan–May

MOSCOW, Jun 5 (PRIME) -- The number of exposed significant databases of Russian companies increased by 33% on the year in January–May, antivirus maker Kaspersky said on Monday in a statement.

“According to the statistics of the Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence service team, in January-May 2023, 33% more cases of publications of significant databases of Russian companies were recorded compared to the same period last year,” the statement read.

“In the first five months of 2023, 197 million rows of user data were discovered on specialized forums. It is worth noting that 81 million of them contained phone numbers, and 23 million contained passwords.”

The fact that posts were more often placed on specialized platforms than general floors points to the leaks from retail, IT, and finances, compared to restaurants and online services at the beginning of 2022.

In 2023, publications about compromised data were often related to large companies unlike in 2022, when the reports were about small and medium-sized business.
