PRESS: Hackers steal money from bank’s correspondent account
MOSCOW, Dec 15 (PRIME) -- Hackers have successfully attacked a correspondent account of an unnamed bank with the Russian central bank for the first time in three years, business daily Vedomosti reported on Wednesday citing data of cybersecurity company Group-IB.
“The fraudsters managed to fake some files when the bank sent payments to the central bank, and as a result, the money from the correspondent account of the bank went to the perpetrators’ accounts,” the daily reported.
The amount of the theft was not disclosed, but Group-IB said “it has been the largest amount over the recent years withdrawn in such a way.”
Group-IB thinks the attack was orchestrated by Russian-speaking hacker group MoneyTaker, whose members remain unknown.
A regulator representative confirmed that the central bank is aware of the incident and upon the study of its reasons, the participants of information exchange were informed about them.
