Report: European Commission not to stop Nord Stream-2 Ц Merkel
MOSCOW, May 16 (PRIME) -- The European Commission will not be able to stop implementation of Russia-led Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project despite adoption of amendments to the E.U. Gas Directive, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, as cited by Handelsblatt on Thursday.
УThe Gas Directive gives the European Commission more opportunities for objection. But it will not hamper it (the project),Ф Merkel said.
УOn the whole I believe that it (the project) is acceptable,Ф she said.
Merkel also said that the issue of gas transit through Ukraine is the key one. УUkraine should remain the transit country despite the Nord Stream-2,Ф she said.
The Nord Stream-2 project envisages construction of two lines of a natural gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Russian gas giant Gazprom is implementing the project together with GermanyТs E.ON and BASF, Royal Dutch Shell, OMV, and FranceТs Engie.
