Operator: Gazprom suspends gas transit to Hungary via Ukraine

KIEV, Oct 1 (PRIME) -- Russian gas giant Gazprom has suspended natural gas transit to Hungary through Ukraine, the Gas Transmission System (GTS) Operator of Ukraine said in a statement on Friday.

On Monday, Gazprom and Hungarian company MVM CEEnergy Ltd signed new contracts for the sale of 4.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas in the next 15 years starting from Friday. The Russian company is to deliver 3.5 bcm through Serbia and 1 bcm through Austria per year. Gazprom started pumping gas to Hungary from the TurkStream pipeline through Bulgaria and Serbia on Friday.

“From that start of the new gas day at 7.00 a.m. on October 1, 2021, natural gas transit through the territory of Ukraine to Hungary was suspended. Requests for gas transit were not submitted although Ukraine’s capacities at the entry point to Hungary were contracting for the entire gas period from October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022 in the amount of 24.6 million cubic meters per day,” GTS Operator of Ukraine said.
