Russia’s Norilsk Nickel allows SNC-Lavalin to work at plant

MOSCOW, Nov 8 (PRIME) -- The board of directors of Russian metals giant Norilsk Nickel has approved a contract with Canadian engineering company SNC-Lavalin for works under a sulfur dioxide capture project for Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant, Norilsk Nickel said in a statement Tuesday.

SNC-Lavalin is to prepare the project design documentation until the end of 2017.

The project “represents the second phase of the Company’s large scale environmental program with an ultimate goal to reduce air emissions at Polar Division by 75%. The first phase included downstream reconfiguration and asset modernization, as part of which Nickel Plant was successfully phased out in August 2016 and modernized Talnakh Concentrator has been commissioned,” the company said.

Previously, Norilsk said it plans to spend mainly own money on the project, which cost is estimated at U.S. $2 billion. The project is to be finished by 2020.
