Pompeo says US wants EU independence from Russian gas
HOUSTON, U.S., Mar 13 (PRIME) -- The U.S. does not want its European allies to depend on Russian gas and the U.S. to depend on Venezuelan oil, U.S. State Secretary Michael Pompeo said on Wednesday.
“We don’t want our European allies hooked on Russian gas through the Nord Stream-2 project, any more than we ourselves want to be dependent on Venezuelan oil supplies,” Pompeo said.
The official earlier accused Russian oil producer Rosneft of buying crude from Venezuela and Russian companies of buying Venezuela’s gold reserves for money. Rosneft said it will protect its rights if it bears losses due to these statements.
