Ukraine to buy 26 bcm of Russian gas in 2013

MOSCOW, Dec 13 (PRIME) – Ukraine will buy around 26 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia in 2013, Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov said Friday, as cited by RIA Novosti.

“Russian gas consumption by Ukraine will be 40% less than in 2010. It is approximately 26 billion cubic meters against 37 billion cubic meters,” Azarov said.

Heavily dependent on imports of Russian gas, Ukraine has been long striving to revise a 2009 agreement with gas giant Gazprom, which it says sets excessively high prices. Kiev is trying to find alternative sources of gas and increase its own production.

Ukraine planned to import buy 27.3 billion cubic meters of gas in 2013, including 18 billion cubic meters directly from Gazprom, 8 billion cubic meters from Ostchem, held by Ukrainian tycoon Dmitry Firtash, and 1.3 billion cubic meters from German gas trader RWE Supply&Trading.
