OMV CEO says first gas to be pumped via Nord Stream 2 in 2021

MOSCOW, Jul 28 (PRIME) – Gas pumping through Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline may start as early as in 2021, Rainer Seele, CEO of Austria’s OMV, said in a news conference on Wednesday.

“The CEO (of Nord Stream 2 AG) said that construction works will be finished at the end of August. That is why we believe that gas may be pumped this year,” he said.

Earlier in July, Nord Stream 2 AG CEO Matthias Warnig said that the company planned to finish pipe laying at the end of August. The project is 98% finished, and construction of the first thread has been concluded. Tests and certification of the pipeline will take two to three months, and the work for the first thread has started.

The Nord Stream 2 project envisages construction of two lines of a natural gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Russian gas giant Gazprom builds the pipeline together with Germany’s Uniper and Wintershall Dea, Royal Dutch Shell, Austria’s OMV, and France’s Engie.
