Russia’s Rostelecom builds first stage of Sakhalin–mainland line
MOSCOW, Feb 21 (PRIME) -- Major Russian telecommunications company Rostelecom has completed the first stage of the construction of a fiber optic line linking the localities of Selekhino, located in the mainland’s Khabarovsk Region, and Tymovskoye, located on Sakhalin island, the company said, RIA Novosti reported Tuesday.
The launch of the first stage of the line allowed Rostelecom to reduce the price for broadband Internet access services for Sakhalin inhabitants 30%. The company also started selling high definition IPTV (television via Internet protocol) services on the island after the launch of the first stage of the fiber optic line.
Before the launch of Rostelecom’s fiber optic line, only wireline operator TransTeleCom’s line connected Sakhalin peninsula and the mainland.
Rostelecom plans to complete the project for the construction of the main line linking Sakhalin with the mainland in July–December.
The company’s total investments in the line with a total length of about 700 kilometers are estimated at 700 million rubles, Rostelecom said.
Rostelecom is Russia’s largest main line operator. The total length of its main lines amounts to 500,000 kilometers, according to the company’s data.
